CITY OF FORT ATKINSON, Wis. (WKOW) - The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation are looking into an officer involved death in Fort Atkinson.

Officers with the Fort Atkinson Police Department responded to the 600 block of Washington Street for a report of shots fired on Sunday at around 5 p.m. Law enforcement surrounded the residence.

During the encounter, an officer shot at a subject. The subject was flown to a hospital in Madison, where they later were pronounced dead.

Law enforcement say a rifle was recovered from the scene. No officers were hurt.

Fort Atkinson PD says the officer was wearing a body camera during the exchange of gunfire and that officer is placed on administrative leave, per the agency's policies.
