More than a million people across Massachusetts may be struggling to afford food by the end of the week if the government remains closed.

Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is expected to stop going out Nov. 1 if the federal government does not reopen before the new month begins.

Massachusetts receives around $240 million on a monthly basis from the federal government to fund SNAP in the Bay State.

Governor Maura Healey held a news conference to discuss the issue Friday, saying the state was doing what it could but there is no way the Commonwealth can subsidize a program of that size.
