MADISON — The State Building Commission this week will take up the first steps in implementing Gov. Tony Evers’ plans to overhaul the state’s embattled prisons.

The commission will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 28 in Madison.

What is the commission taking on?

The group will discuss releasing $15 million set aside in the biennial budget passed earlier this year to begin planning the overhaul process. While sweeping changes will likely take years, getting started now could allow lawmakers to prioritize closing Green Bay Correctional Institution, one of the state's oldest and most problem-ridden facilities.

Who is on the commission?

The commission is made up of Republican and Democratic lawmakers and a citizen representative.
