KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A longtime Knoxville advocate and community organizer filed a petition in federal court for his freedom Friday after he was detained Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Middle Tennessee on Oct. 15 , according to Allies of Knoxville's Immigrant Neighbors.

Alejandro Guizar Lozano, 32, filed a writ of habeas corpus in U.S. District Court in the Western District of Louisiana on Friday, the group said. A writ of habeas corpus is a challenge to a person's detainment, asking the government to prove it has legal grounds to hold Guizar Lozano.

Guizar Lozano was detained by ICE in Smith County, Tennessee while reporting for a routine appointment. AKIN organizers said he has been shuttled through four different ICE facilities, leaving him without his attorney and support sys
