A month after 41 people died during a stampede at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur, actor-politician Vijay met the families of the victims on Monday – not in their hometown, but at a seaside resort near his own home on Chennai’s East Coast Road. Top sources in TVK confirmed that 37 of the 41 families arrived in Mahabalipuram on Monday, after being brought by private buses from Karur, more than 400 kilometres away.

Two senior TVK leaders who spoke to The Indian Express on condition of anonymity said Vijay “met each family individually at an auditorium”. “Each meeting lasted about 10 to 15 minutes. All of them were assembled at an auditorium, and he spoke to them behind a screen, one family at a time,” one of the leaders said.
