The Supreme Court on Monday (Oct 27) declined to initiate contempt proceedings against the lawyer accused of hurling a show at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai earlier this month.

A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said that the matter should not be given undue publicity, adding that it will consider laying guidelines to prevent such incidents in future, reported news agency PTI.

The bench acknowledged that acts such as shouting in court or hurling objects clearly constitute contempt, adding that, however, it remains the prerogative of the presiding judge to take action under the law.

"Issuing contempt notice will only give undue importance to the lawyer who had hurled shoe at the CJI and would increase the shelf life of the incident," the bench was quoted as saying
