Juveniles housed at the Juvenile Detention Center will move into the new Juvenile Justice Center from the current facility, built in 1969, in the coming days.

Center director Jamie Gravett said the Center usually has about 30 juveniles on an average day, largely ranging in age from 10-17, though Gravett said most are 15-16. They stay there an average of 30-35 days.

The new center's total $50M cost will be able to increase capacity from 40 to 64.

While at the Center, students must continue receiving an education, which the Sioux Falls School District is required to provide. The SFSD also educates students in psychiatric residential treatment facilities, Summit Oaks , and Avera Behavioral Health , for example.
