The fanfare and hope that day in 2002 was enormous: then-Gov. Jane Dee Hull, Phoenix City Hall and the state's public universities, among others, announced a $117.6 million investment in turning Arizona into a bioscience hub.
The multimillion dollar investment created the nonprofit Translational Genomics Research Institute , TGEN, to be located in Phoenix. TGEN's focus on taking new research on the genetic components of serious diseases from the science lab to treatment at a patient's bedside was the kind of work that could change and save lives.
