Tax credits for people who get health insurance through the marketplaces created by the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, expire at the end of the year.
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, if the tax credits expire, annual out-of-pocket premiums are estimated to increase by 114% — an average of over $1,000 next year.
Joe Poindexter, vice president at Health Care Access Maryland, a nonprofit that helps individuals and families enroll in health coverage, said the organization speaks with many people every day.
“We are getting a ton of requests for help,” Poindexter said. “They are nervous, afraid and anxious.”
