The NCAA has been ordered to pay $18 million to a former South Carolina State football player and his wife in a concussion lawsuit, a South Carolina jury ruled.

Robert Geathers, 68, and his wife, Debra, were awarded $10 million and $8 million, respectively, after the jury ruled the NCAA was negligent in failing to warn Geathers about the long-term effects of concussions, the AP reports.

Geathers, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2017, suffers from severe memory loss and other physical ailments that make him unable to dress himself, make a meal or have a job, according to The State .
