SARGENT’S PURCHASE, N.H. (WCAX) — A Rhode Island man is safe after search crews helped him off Mt. Washington Sunday night.

New Hampshire Fish and Game officials say Owen Strommer, 20, called 911 for help on his cell phone around 7 p.m. from the Tuckerman Ravine Trail just below the summit.

They say his phone and headlamp were dying and that he was unprepared for the low visibility, single-digit windchills, and snow he encountered above treeline.

Officials say park staff shone headlights at the top of the Tucks Trail to help guide him to safety around 8:30 p.m.

He was warmed and evaluated at the summit and then taken down the Auto Road.
