Yellowstone National Park late Sunday closed all roads south of Mammoth because of hazardous driving conditions and multiple weather-related vehicle incidents.

The temporary closure went into effect at 5 p.m. and remained in effect Monday morning throughout most of the park.

As of Monday morning, the only open road was from the North Entrance at Gardiner, through the town of Mammoth to the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City.

The park stated that staff spent much of Sunday dealing 30-plus traffic incidents, including stranded vehicles and “slide-offs.”

The closure “will allow road crews time to safely clear snow and address icy conditions,” the park stated in a news release. (Click here to check road conditions.)

More snow and high winds were in the forecast for parts of the park Monday. But conditions will be assessed for possible road openings in some areas throughout the day.
