SARGENT'S PURCHASE, N.H. (WPRI) — A Rhode Island man caught in frigid wind and snowy conditions was rescued from the trail near the top of Mount Washington on Sunday night.
Owen Strommer, 20, of Wakefield, was about a third of a mile below the summit on Tuckerman Ravine Trail around 7 p.m. when the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department received a 911 call.
Although cell service was spotty, authorities learned Strommer's headlamp and phone were rapidly dying and he didn't have any backup equipment. He told them he was OK at the moment, but not ready to stay overnight — especially if he had to stop moving.
According to N.H. Operation Game Thief (NHOGT), the weather included windblown snow with limited visibility, an air temperature of 21 degrees and a wind chill of 3 degrees.
