Belle Isle police were notified Monday that a possible mortar had been located in the backyard of a residence off Waltham Avenue.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded to the scene and took control of what it has confirmed to be a mortar.

It has since been taken to an OCSO facility, where it was rendered safe.

Students near the scene at Cornerstone Charter Academy were relocated inside the school out of an abundance of caution.

This is a developing news story and will be updated as more information is released.
