Shillong, Oct 27: Five citizens of Bangladesh were intercepted and detained at Mawlai Mawiong on Sunday.
Acting on intelligence inputs, a police special cell and the Special Operation Team (SOT) set up a checkpoint at the ISBT junction at Mawlai Mawiong.
At around 8:40pm a Meghalaya-registered tourist taxi with five occupants was stopped. During a preliminary inquiry, the five were unable to produce valid documents and admitted to being Bangladeshis.
They were reportedly on their way to their native country from Kashmir and were meant to travel via Shillong.
The five – two women and three men – were identified by police as Md Alamgir Mia (25), Lelepa Begum (40), Musanat Jahana Khatoon (35), Md Imammul Hassan (18) and Md Fajid Bilal (47).
They have been arrested and a criminal complain
