Two Thunder Bay athletes have completed one of the toughest foot races in the world, the Moab 240 Trail Race. The 240-mile ( 386 kilometre) ultra-marathon passes through Utah’s desert canyons, red rock mesas and mountain peaks — with runners ascending and descending several thousands of metres.
Andrew Smith and John Power were among the finishers of this year’s event, which pushes runners to their physical and mental limits. Runners have up to 117 hours to complete it, passing through 15 aid stations and five designated sleep stations staffed by volunteers and medical teams.
For Power, it was the longest race he’d ever attempted.
“I've been doing ultras for a few years now,” he said. “The furthest I've gone prior to Moab was 100 miles three years ago in Alberta.”
