Rep. Lauren Boebert faced criticism for her Halloween costume, which she wore to a party in Loveland, Colorado, on Friday night. Boebert, representing Colorado's 4th congressional district, dressed in traditional Mexican attire, complete with a sombrero. Her boyfriend, Kyle Pearcy, a real estate broker, wore a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent uniform.
Photos from the event show the couple posing together, but a chalkboard sign that was reportedly present at another event that night has drawn particular ire. The sign read, "Mexican Word of the Day: JUICY. Tell me if Juicy ICE coming," which many interpreted as a racially insensitive joke.
A party attendee described the costume as "the most disgusting thing I have ever seen," adding that even conservative guests were shocked and avoided the couple.
In response to the backlash, Boebert's office issued a statement downplaying the incident. "It's a Halloween costume. Tell our Senators to vote for the CR and open the government. They are choosing to let millions of American families suffer," the statement said.
Boebert has been a controversial figure during her time in Congress, previously making headlines for being escorted out of a Broadway theater for disruptive behavior. In that incident, she was accused of vaping and acting inappropriately during a performance.
The recent Halloween costume controversy has reignited discussions about Boebert's public image and her past actions. As a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump, she has often found herself at the center of various controversies.
Boebert, a mother of four, filed for divorce from her husband in May 2023 after nearly two decades of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. The fallout from her Halloween costume continues to unfold as public reactions and discussions persist.
