Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul on Monday announced $30 million in emergency food assistance for New Yorkers as the federal government shutdown threatens to cut off Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ( SNAP) benefits for nearly 3 million residents.
In a press release, Hochul criticized U.S. House Republicans, including New York Representative Elise Stefanik, for refusing to reopen the government while food pantries warn they cannot meet surging demand.
“I am doing everything in my power to soften the blow of the destruction Republicans in Washington are inflicting on our state,” Hochul said in the release.
