A Mississauga manufacturer has been fined $150,000 after a worker was killed while operating a paint mixing machine last year.

The worker was creating a batch of paint at a Pigments Services Canada Inc. facility in April 2024 when their clothes became tangled in the machine, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development said in a news release Monday.

The paint mixing process involved “lowering a paddle into a vat driven by an exposed rotating shaft,” said the release. “While working alone, the worker’s clothing became entangled in the unguarded shaft, resulting in a fatal injury."

Following a guilty plea, Pigments Services Canada Inc. was fined for failing to ensure that its machines were properly guarded to protect workers.
