Hundreds of British tourists are reportedly under lockdown at a hotel in Jamaica as a powerful Category 5 hurricane approaches the island. ‌

Guests at the Caribbean resort say they’ve been instructed to remain in their rooms until at least Wednesday for safety reasons. Around 200 British visitors are believed to be confined to the hotel, reports the Mirror. ‌

Hurricane Melissa is forecast to be the most powerful storm ever recorded to strike Jamaica since recordkeeping began in 1851. ‌
