CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A group that monitors water quality across Iowa appeared before Linn County supervisors Monday seeking local government funding to continue operations after the state cut its funding in 2023.

The Iowa Water Quality Information System operates dozens of sensors throughout the state, many monitoring nitrate levels in Iowa’s waterways. The group has enough funding to operate until July 2026 and is now asking several counties for contributions.

The program needs an estimated $600,000 annually to continue monitoring and upgrading equipment as needed. Polk County has already committed $200,000 to the program.
