SALEM, Ore. - Governor Tina Kotek (D-Ore.) and other Oregon officials are calling on the USDA to ensure SNAP benefits continue during the federal shutdown. They stress the importance of contingency funds to prevent hunger among 757,000 Oregonians.

The letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins highlights the risk of food insecurity affecting children and older adults.

"Hunger should never be a consequence of political stalemate," said the letter.

More than 757,000 Oregonians rely on SNAP, including 210,000 children and 130,000 older adults. Disruptions could impact rural economies, which depend on SNAP dollars.
