FORT ATKINSON, Wis. (WMTV) - Neighbors in Fort Atkinson were surprised to see a heavy police presence outside their homes Sunday night.

A man was shot and killed by police after officers responded to reports of shots fired in a home, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

The DOJ says around 5 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Washington Street.

Neighbors in the area told WMTV that they heard shots being fired from the home.

The DOJ confirms that police arrived and surrounded the home after a report of a disturbance with shots fired.

William Otto, who lives next door to the home where the incident happened, said he looked out his window and saw a squad car parked in front of his house with an officer standing behind it with an automatic rifle.
