A 24-year-old woman has been identified as one of the miners killed in an underground explosion in western NSW on Tuesday morning.

Holly Clarke was working at the mine on Endeavor Road, Cobar, about 700 kilometres north-west of Sydney, when she was critically injured following an explosion around 3.45am on Tuesday, Nine News reports.

Clarke died after being brought back to the surface, while a man in his sixties was confirmed dead when police arrived at the scene. Both lived in Cobar.

Clarke was raised to the surface with another woman in her twenties, who was airlifted to hospital to be treated for hearing damage and shock.

Cobar Shire mayor Jarrod Marsden said the event was “absolutely tragic” for the local community.
