ST. PAUL, Minn. (GRAY) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has announced $4M in emergency funding for emergency food assistance in Minnesota.
The announcement comes just days before Minnesota’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families, or DCYF, is expected to stop processing SNAP benefits amid the ongoing federal government shutdown.
While DCYF is responsible for processing and handling SNAP benefits at a state level, the program’s funding ultimately comes from the federal government, which has been shut down since Oct. 1.
SNAP enrollment in Minnesota has remained steady in recent years; more than 7% of the state’s population is currently enrolled.
“[There are] 9 million visits a year in Minnesota. We have over 440,000 Minnesotans needing SNAP benefits,” said Walz on Monday.
