Police believe they have found the body of a hang-glider who went missing on Sunday afternoon on the NSW Mid North Coast.

A 59-year-old man took off at Lindeman's Point near Forster, but had not been heard from or seen since.

Emergency services were subsequently called to Lakeside Crescent at Elizabeth Beach.

It was believed he had lost altitude soon after taking off.

A multi-agency search subsequently commenced on both land and water, being centred in an area of Booti Booti National Park.

Search and Rescue crews were hampered by difficult conditions, with the search halted after six hours yesterday.
