An exhausted Japanese governor will request military help to cull bears in the northern region he oversees after an increasing number of attacks this year.

Akita Governor Kenta Suzuki is attempting to arrange a meeting with the Ministry of Defence sometime this week, but noted it would be difficult to schedule as it aligns with US President Donald Trump's visit to Japan.

He said that while no law details that defence can be dispatched to exterminate bears as they can for disaster relief, the situation in his region is now "beyond the scope that only prefectures and municipalities can handle".

"The exhaustion of the field is reaching its limit, so we decided to make a request to the Ministry of Defence at the time when the new cabinet was started," he said on social media.
