Alabama does not have the money to step in and pay benefits for the 750,000 people in the state who will not receive their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in November, Gov. Kay Ivey said.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources, which administers SNAP in Alabama, announced Monday morning that benefits are suspended for November because of the federal government shutdown.
“As Alabama DHR noted, SNAP benefits are 100% federally funded, and therefore, U.S. Food and Nutrition Services controls the issuance of these benefits on EBT cards,” Gina Maiola, Ivey’s communications director, said Monday.
“While the state does not have extra money to do Congress’ job, Governor Ivey hopes to see U.S. Senate Democrats get on board to reopen the federal government.”
