CHICAGO, Ill. (WMBD) -- Justice P. Scott Neville, Jr. assumed the office of Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court on Sunday, Oct. 26.

Justice Neville is the second black man and 123rd Chief Justice in the state's History. He follows the Late Justice Charles Freeman, who served from 1997 to 1999.

Chief Justice Neville became a Cook County Circuit Court Judge in 1999, an Appellate Court Justice in 2004, and an Illinois Supreme Court justice in 2018. He was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Freeman.

Public trust in the courts is of the utmost importance to the new Chief Justice.
