Federal prosecutors want the friend and former lawyer of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi to spend one year in prison for filing fraudulent tax returns and omitting more than $1.8 million in income, including money from a Syrian charity in Metro Detroit.

Court records describe vast sums of money, a pattern of wrongdoing and a years-long tax scheme orchestrated by a globe-trotting attorney, 55-year-old Virginia resident Asim Ghafoor, whose high-profile clientele has included foreign governments.
