DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Parents are calling for an independent audit of suspended DeKalb County Schools Superintendent Dr. Devon Horton's spending after he was indicted on federal charges of fraud, theft and tax evasion earlier this month.

Federal prosecutors allege Horton was involved in a kickback scheme that defrauded the northern Illinois school district he led until 2023. Horton pleaded not guilty last week. His attorney told 11Alive the charges have nothing to do with his work in DeKalb County.

Following the indictment, 11Alive reviewed Horton's bank statements and uncovered tens of thousands of dollars in purchases over three years. Many of the charges included conferences, catering and office supplies.
