The Papa Gino's at Hyde Park Avenue and River Street outlasted the Brigham's across the street, but turned off its ovens and served its last pie over the weekend.
The Hyde Park Papa Gino's opened in the mid-1960s, just the fifth in Michael Valerio's burgeoning pizza empire, which started in East Boston as Piece O'Pizza, then expanded to more than 200 restaurants across New England, before running into financial problems under new owners, which led to bankruptcy and large numbers of the outlets shutting down.
The Hyde Park restaurant, which re-opened after being destroyed in a 2005 fire, was closed yesterday, as a sole employee seemed to do some cleaning up in the kitchen.
