Major social media platforms have flagged the possibility that government-issued identification may be required to enforce the Albanese government’s social media ban.
The government’s social media ban for children under 16 comes into effect from December 10 and will impact millions of users in Australia.
At a parliamentary committee on Tuesday, social media giants were asked to respond to the privacy risks of requiring IDs to verify user accounts.
TikTok Public Policy Lead for Content and Safety Ella Woods-Joyce acknowledged that ID-based verification could become part of the age assurance process.
