MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - The city of Murfreesboro has received its 4,000th odor complaint about Middle Point Landfill since launching an online portal for residents to report issues.
Mayor Shane McFarland said complaints have come from residents five to seven miles away from the facility. The landfill has faced ongoing odor complaints for a decade, with residents describing the smell as “stinky” and “horrible.”
Violations and water concerns
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has issued seven violations against the landfill in the last 10 months, according to the city. Some violations relate to the Clean Water Act, raising concerns since the landfill sits next to the county’s water supply.
