Jefferson County Public Schools is grappling with how to address a $188 million budget shortfall for the 2026 fiscal year.
During a meeting held Tuesday night, special education and language proficiency programs presented their cases to the board's budget task force, emphasizing the importance of their work amid looming financial challenges.
JCPS Superintendent Brian Yearwood has proposed cutting $132 million from the district's operating budget, a move that could result in significant changes for the community. Board member James Craig urged parents to prepare for the impact of these financial decisions.
"There's likely layoffs," Craig said. "Programs that have yielded positive outcomes for this community are going to have to be downsized."
