Three of the trustees of the Tata Trusts are learnt to have rejected the proposal to reappoint Mehli Mistry as a life trustee, several sources said, setting the stage for further strife.

Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata, vice chairman Venu Srinivasan, and Vijay Singh, whose appointment to the board of Tata Sons was voted down by a section of the trustees that included Mistry, have opposed the reappointment, the sources said.

The trustees’ rejection of the proposal has been conveyed to the Chief Executive Officer of Tata Trusts, Siddharth Sharma, they added.

Unanimity rule blocks move

Trustees’ reappointments must be carried unanimously, and even if one member dissents, the proposal will not go through.

This means that Mistry’s tenure as trustee will come to an end today.
