LOS ANGELES—Eric Lauer helped save the Blue Jays’ season when he came out of nowhere to become a reliable member of the starting rotation. In Game 3 of the World Series, he tried to do the same for their hopes of a title.

Lauer entered out of the Jays bullpen and tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings in a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers that ended early Tuesday morning. It was his stellar performance when the pressure was at its highest that helped the marathon contest match the longest in World Series history.

The versatile left-hander did everything he could to buy the offence time to score. Unfortunately for the Jays, they didn’t do anything with it before lefty Brendon Little surrendered a walk-off homer to Freddie Freeman in the bottom of the 18th inning.
