A sawmill operation in central Pennsylvania is capitalizing on a process that transforms hardwood into durable, long-lasting lumber without the aid of chemicals or plastic.
Bingaman and Son Lumber in Kreamer, Snyder County, began using a process called thermal modification in 2008. Popular at mills in Europe for years, the technique uses a heat and vacuum treatment that changes kiln-dried hardwood at the molecular level, increasing its weather resistance and dimensional stability for outdoor use.
