A senator from Waterloo Region is behind a push to restrict when and where sports gambling can be advertised.

Sen. Marty Deacon said gambling ads are negatively affecting children and introducing them to addictive behaviour.

“We need to do something,” she said. “Regardless of where you live in Canada — even though this is provincial jurisdiction — we need to do something that pulls the reins in.”

Deacon’s bill, S-211 — the National Framework on Sports Betting Advertising Act — would establish a national strategy for the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to regulate gambling ads.

The bill aims to restrict the use of advertising, limiting the number, scope or location of where ads can appear. Deacon said this could mean no gambling ads being shown during a sport
