It was supposed to be the safest of nights.

It was designed to be a night for women to walk the darkened streets of our city feeling safe and strong and seen.

But Corey Jeffrey violated that in the most spectacular, repulsive way.

He committed a hate crime against one of the participants.

On Sept. 21, 2023, as women marched through the downtown core to celebrate Take Back the Night, Jeffrey grabbed a banner held by a woman and, when she tried to grab it back, dragged her along the street. She suffered a concussion as a result.

The banner said: “Decriminalize sex work.”

During his attack, Jeffrey shouted derogatory words at his victim. His vulgar rant continued as he was placed in a police cruiser.
