JASPER, Ind. — Dubois County, IN, Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter faced questions from his County Council Monday night about the last three months of jail commissary spending. WHAS11 was there and tried to interview the sheriff, after he had declined for over a month.
We first told you about the 2024 audit into Kleinhelter and the Indiana State Police Investigation into him in early September. In July 2024, the Indiana State Board of Accounts found Kleinhelter had misspent $16,774 from his jail commissary account on trips for his wife and gifts for his deputies and jailers between 2019 and 2023.
The jail commissary is funded by inmates purchasing snacks and hygiene items while in custody. The audit found that several of Kleinhelter’s expenses were outside the approved uses of the commissary. H
