The USDA announced earlier this week that it will be halting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP) in the midst of an ongoing federal government shutdown, starting Nov. 1.

As food pantries approach the Saturday start date, some say they were already helping a record-breaking number of households and are now preparing for a significant strain on resources.

The Choice Pantry at Greer Relief says it served a little over 8,000 households last year and is looking to surpass that this year, with a total so far of just over 7,200 households helped.
