(KIMT) -- As of 9 AM Tuesday, Hurricane Melissa continues to strengthen ahead of an imminent Jamaican landfall. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 185 MPH, maintaining its Category 5 strength.
Melissa is set to make landfall on Jamaica at some point Tuesday with 185 MPH winds, catastrophic flash flooding, and landslides. Widespread infrastructure damage, power and communication outages, and life-threatening conditions are expected.
Melissa will track directly over the island, impacting other Caribbean islands to the north.
With Melissa's minimum central pressure of 896mb as of 8 AM Tuesday, Melissa is officially designated as the fifth strongest Atlantic hurricane in recorded history.
