JAMAICA, — Hurricane Melissa continues to make history in the Caribbean. It is one of the strongest storms ever seen in the Atlantic, and a catastrophic impact is expected in Jamaica as it makes landfall Tuesday.
Melissa has remained a Category 5 hurricane for more than 24 hours. Winds have peaked at 175 mph, with the pressure getting down to an incredibly low 901mb.
This is stronger than Hurricane Katrina and currently stands as the eighth most intense hurricane ever seen in the Atlantic. It is also the most intense hurricane seen in the Atlantic Ocean this late in the hurricane season. There is the chance it ends up a bit stronger just before landfall in Jamaica.
