NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Since the start of the year, the NYPD has made 24,060 arrests in New York City’s transit system, a 44% increase from the year before.
Some 10,92 of these arrests were for fare evasion, reflecting a 43% increase from 2024, the data show.
“It is the uptick in violation arrests that merits attention. As you know, seemingly minor unlawful acts weigh heavily on our riders' minds and can greatly impact… their perception of safety,” Chief of Transit Keith Shine said.
Over the same period, major crimes decreased by 4%, according to NYPD data. Murders, robberies and grand larcenies all decreased in 2025, while rape, felany assaults and burglaries have increased, NYPD data show.
