An accused shoplifter who prosecutors said attempted to stab a Sterling Heights police officer with a screwdriver is now asking for a psychological assessment to determine if he understands the charges against him.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said Joshua Mills made the request on Monday when he was scheduled for a preliminary exam before 41A District Court Judge Kimberley A. Wiegand. Instead, Mills waived his right to an exam and was bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court for trial.
Mills requested a criminal responsibility assessment though the forensic center to determine if he understands the criminal charges and can assist in his defense.
