BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - After undergoing rapid intensification this weekend, Melissa is now a catastrophic category 5 storm that has Jamaica in her sights.
At this time, Hurricane Melissa surges about 140 Miles southwest of Kingston, Jamaica with max winds of 175 mph. Over the next 12 hours, the storm will continue to push northwest over open water, before making direct landfall on Jamaica near or at category 5 strength, the strongest storm to ever impact the island. The strongest hurricane to make a landfall on Jamaica, prior to Melissa was Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 as a Category 3 hurricane.
By Tuesday, Melissa will impact the island with life threatening hurricane force winds, storm surge, and rainfall amounts upwards of 15 to 40 inches, which will induce deadly flash flooding and lands
