Certain supplements can interfere with bleeding, anesthesia, or healing before and after a surgery. Most healthcare providers recommend stopping all supplements (including vitamins, herbs, and homeopathic remedies) at least 10–14 days before your procedure.
1. Supplements That Increase Bleeding Risk
Many multivitamins and herbal supplements can act as blood thinners or interfere with the body's natural blood clotting process. When used alongside anticoagulants, they can affect the body's blood clotting ability during surgery.
These supplements can also lead to excessive bleeding or hematoma (a pool of clotted blood) formation during or after the surgery, which is extremely dangerous. Supplements include:
Aloe
Garlic
Ginger
Ginkgo biloba
Ginseng
Glucosamine
Guarana
Vitamin E
