A Lufthansa flight traveling from Chicago to Germany was diverted to Boston on Saturday after a 28-year-old man allegedly stabbed two teenage passengers with a metal fork. The incident prompted authorities to arrest Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli, who now faces a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to cause bodily harm.
The flight, designated as Lufthansa Flight 431, was en route to Frankfurt when the alleged stabbings occurred. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts, Usiripalli is accused of stabbing a 17-year-old male passenger in the shoulder area and then attacking another 17-year-old male passenger in the back of the head with the same fork. The first victim was reportedly awakened from sleep to find Usiripalli standing over him.
The second victim sustained a laceration to the back of his head. The attack occurred shortly after meal service on the flight. Following the stabbings, Usiripalli allegedly made a gun shape with his fingers, placed it in his mouth, and pretended to pull a trigger. He also reportedly slapped a female passenger and attempted to slap a crew member.
Usiripalli, an Indian national, was admitted to the United States on a student visa and was enrolled in a master’s program in biblical studies. However, he currently does not have legal status in the U.S., according to the attorney’s office. He is scheduled to appear in a Boston court at a later date and could face up to 10 years in prison, along with a fine of up to $250,000.
This incident follows another recent case involving a passenger on an Alaska Airlines flight who was arrested after allegedly attacking two flight attendants, leading to an emergency landing. The Alaska Airlines flight was diverted to Boise, Idaho, and the passenger was charged with battery.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not provided information on whether Usiripalli has legal representation. The case highlights ongoing concerns about passenger safety on commercial flights.
