BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - Hurricane Melissa made landfall today along the southwest coast of Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane. At the time of landfall, the minimum central pressure was 892 mb, and sustained winds were at 185 MPH.

It ties Dorian and the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane for the strongest hurricane at the time of landfall in the Atlantic Basin based on wind speed.

It also ties with the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane for third most intense hurricane by pressure ever observed in the Atlantic basin.
